DEREK AND ALYSSA lay in silence for several minutes, neither of them saying a word. He had no idea what to think. None at all. He’d tried his damnedest to warn her, to drive her out the door, because as much as he wanted her here tonight, he’d told her the truth. In the end, he’d only cause her grief.

But she’d stayed. And he had no clue where they went from here.

Don’t think about that now. Just think about her.

He turned over onto his side, bunching the pillow beneath his head, still holding her hand. Alyssa took a deep, cleansing breath, her body melting into total relaxation.

She turned to face him. “You were right before.”

“About what?”

“When I was on that stage tonight and looked up to see you there, in spite of everything…”

“Yes?”

“I was glad to see you.”

He’d been stabbing in the dark when he’d said that. Challenging her. Trying something—anything—to keep her from sending him away. And now he knew. Even when she’d protested later, in those first few seconds when he’d shown up, her last thought had been to ask him to leave.

“You looked beautiful,” he told her. “I don’t think I ever got around to telling you that.”

“You looked pretty nice yourself. I’d never seen you in a suit before.”

“Tomorrow it’s going to be a tuxedo.”

“A tux? Why?”

“A former member of my team is getting married at noon. I’m his best man.”

She looked at him strangely.

“What?” he asked.

“A wedding. It just seems so…I don’t know. Ordinary.”

“So what am I? Extraordinary?”

She sighed contentedly. “Oh, yeah.”

As she spoke, he was reminded of how her voice sounded after they made love, floating across the darkness on waves of total satisfaction, a voice he could lie here and listen to for the rest of his life.

“Actually,” she said, “I was thinking about the fact that you’re not exactly a run-of-the-mill kind of guy. Look at what you were doing in that penthouse.”

“It’s ordinary for me.”

She smiled. “Yeah. I guess it is.” She rolled onto her side so she was face-to-face with him. “So the groom is a former member of your team? What is he doing now?”

“He has a security firm. He contracts everything from on-site armed security to bodyguard services. He has some out-of-town clients, but for the most part his business keeps him in Dallas.”

“So he lives here, too?”

“Yeah. And with luck, he’ll actually make it back here for his wedding.”

“What do you mean?”

“He’s in Washington. My regular pilot was out sick, so I asked Gus to do one last job for me. He’s the one who flew Gerald Owens to Washington for interrogation.”

“And he might not make it back?”

“He was held up getting to Washington because of bad weather there. He’s flying back in the morning. As long as nothing else goes wrong, he’ll make it.”

“So Owens is being interrogated? What do you hope to find out from him?”

Derek hesitated, even as he was beginning to realize that what Alyssa had said earlier held more truth than he cared to admit.
