DEREK AND ALYSSA lay in silence for several minutes, neither of them saying a word. He had no idea what to think. None at all. Heâd tried his damnedest to warn her, to drive her out the door, because as much as he wanted her here tonight, heâd told her the truth. In the end, heâd only cause her grief.
But sheâd stayed. And he had no clue where they went from here.
Donât think about that now. Just think about her.
He turned over onto his side, bunching the pillow beneath his head, still holding her hand. Alyssa took a deep, cleansing breath, her body melting into total relaxation.
She turned to face him. âYou were right before.â
âAbout what?â
âWhen I was on that stage tonight and looked up to see you there, in spite of everythingâ¦â
âYes?â
âI was glad to see you.â
Heâd been stabbing in the dark when heâd said that. Challenging her. Trying somethingâanythingâto keep her from sending him away. And now he knew. Even when sheâd protested later, in those first few seconds when heâd shown up, her last thought had been to ask him to leave.
âYou looked beautiful,â he told her. âI donât think I ever got around to telling you that.â
âYou looked pretty nice yourself. Iâd never seen you in a suit before.â
âTomorrow itâs going to be a tuxedo.â
âA tux? Why?â
âA former member of my team is getting married at noon. Iâm his best man.â
She looked at him strangely.
âWhat?â he asked.
âA wedding. It just seems soâ¦I donât know. Ordinary.â
âSo what am I? Extraordinary?â
She sighed contentedly. âOh, yeah.â
As she spoke, he was reminded of how her voice sounded after they made love, floating across the darkness on waves of total satisfaction, a voice he could lie here and listen to for the rest of his life.
âActually,â she said, âI was thinking about the fact that youâre not exactly a run-of-the-mill kind of guy. Look at what you were doing in that penthouse.â
âItâs ordinary for me.â
She smiled. âYeah. I guess it is.â She rolled onto her side so she was face-to-face with him. âSo the groom is a former member of your team? What is he doing now?â
âHe has a security firm. He contracts everything from on-site armed security to bodyguard services. He has some out-of-town clients, but for the most part his business keeps him in Dallas.â
âSo he lives here, too?â
âYeah. And with luck, heâll actually make it back here for his wedding.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âHeâs in Washington. My regular pilot was out sick, so I asked Gus to do one last job for me. Heâs the one who flew Gerald Owens to Washington for interrogation.â
âAnd he might not make it back?â
âHe was held up getting to Washington because of bad weather there. Heâs flying back in the morning. As long as nothing else goes wrong, heâll make it.â
âSo Owens is being interrogated? What do you hope to find out from him?â
Derek hesitated, even as he was beginning to realize that what Alyssa had said earlier held more truth than he cared to admit.
